2011 King of Canvas Art Prize

A few weeks back Joshua Smith from Espionage Gallery was lucky enough to be a finalist in the 2011 City of Onkaparinga King of Canvas Aerosol Art Prize. The art prize which had a first Prize of $2000 drew in a large number of submissions from Adelaide’s best Graffiti and Stencil Artists to participate. Apart from the main prizes there was also category prizes for the best Letterform, Character and Stencil works. After finding out Josh was a finalist he went along to the opening night to check it out. After checking out the exhibition the prizes for the best in category were announced with Letterform Winner Mark Boogaart, Character Winner Sam Evans and Josh taking out the Stencil Category.

After a bit more of a look around the exhibition the winners for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were announced. 3rd place went to local freestyle writer Ben Plummer, 2nd place to local freestyle artist Scott Hastings and then 1st place awarded to Josh for his artwork “The Goddess”.

Josh walked away with a giant oversize novelty check for $2000, the King of Canvas Trophy, and the chance to paint a legal wall later in the year with local graffiti artists Stoops and Vans the Omega.

On top of winning 1st Prize, Josh was also lucky enough to sell his piece in the exhibition.

Much respect out to the City of Onkaparinga and all the sponsors for the opportunity.

Joshua Smith Solo Exhibition at 19 Karen Gallery

Joshua Smith, the gallery director of Espionage Gallery recently had the opening of his new solo exhibition entitled “Outside, Inside”. The exhibition which opened on Saturday the 13th of August at 19 Karen Gallery on the gold coast was Joshua’s first solo exhibition in 2 years and his 103rd exhibition to date. The work created for the exhibition focused on the roots of graffiti and its application onto vehicles in New York City and Paris. Joshua recreated minature delivery trucks and streetsweepers as mini stencils and then stencilled these onto canvas and then recreated tags, throwups, stencils and faux advertising which he then applied to the sides of the vehicles. The exhibition is still showing at 19 Karen Gallery, 19 Karen Avenue, Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast until the 10th of September. More info at http://www.19karen.com.au/joshua-smith/joshua-smith-new.php
